The Importance of STEM Education — Must-Know Facts About Studying Abroad in the U.S.

STEM Education refers to an integrated approach to learning that combines Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with the aim of advancing technological development and enhancing competitiveness, which in turn impacts national progress.  

 

Initially, STEM education was primarily implemented in higher education institutions, but the U.S. federal government later emphasized expanding STEM programs into K-12 education. STEM became a standard part of the curriculum for grades 1–12, transforming teaching methods and teacher training to improve student education. Beyond schools, various STEM education companies and technology enterprises have joined forces with the government to popularize STEM, extending its impact beyond the classroom. This initiative is supported comprehensively through scholarships, industrial policies, relevant legislation, funding, and research. Simply put, the U.S. aims to boost economic development and national competitiveness by enhancing workforce quality, which begins with public education. In other words, since "children are the pillars of a nation's future," STEM education must start early. 

 

From a study abroad perspective, a STEM degree is a significant advantage in many U.S. industries. It’s important to note that there isn’t a specific "STEM major" or "STEM degree." Instead, undergraduate or graduate degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics are collectively referred to as STEM degrees. Because STEM emphasizes cross-disciplinary integration, application, and innovation, job opportunities can vary significantly even within the STEM umbrella. For example, Computer Science and Software Engineering were among the most sought-after fields in the U.S. tech industry in 2018, whereas degrees like Mathematics, Physics, and Life Sciences, though also popular, often lead to careers in academic research. In the tech industry, individuals with engineering backgrounds are generally more competitive than those with pure science backgrounds.  

 

Additionally, international students studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa traditionally have one year of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows them to work in the U.S. after graduation. Students with a STEM degree, however, are eligible for a two-year OPT extension, totaling three years. This demonstrates the U.S. government’s commitment to retaining talent. 

 

In recent years, STEM has increasingly integrated the humanities and social sciences, leading to the emergence of terms like STEAM or STEM+. The U.S. has even established prestigious STEM-focused high schools, and business or management schools have begun creating STEM programs, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary learning and problem-solving in the modern era. 

 

 

Given that Taiwan's official education system has yet to fully internationalize, students planning to study abroad in the U.S. can strengthen their STEM profiles through extracurricular activities. Here are five ways to get started: 

Participate in National and International Competitions

There are numerous STEM-related competitions in Taiwan, such as math contests, science fairs, and the Taiwan International Science Fair. To make a stronger impression when applying to U.S. universities, international competitions offer a significant advantage. Examples include the International Science Olympiad and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

 

Become a Teaching Volunteer

One effective way to improve your knowledge in a subject is to teach it. Volunteer to mentor younger students in your school, tutor disadvantaged children, or assist seniors in learning technology. Specific examples include organizing workshops for elementary students, helping underprivileged kids with their studies, or guiding older adults in using tech devices. These activities not only serve the community but also allow you to reassess your own understanding during the teaching process. 

 

Join Robotics Programs

Robotics is closely tied to all aspects of STEM. If your school offers robotics courses or clubs, make sure to participate. If not, consider seeking out private workshops, institutions, or summer camps to stay aligned with global trends. 

 

Build a Website or Develop an App

Coding has become an essential skill in today’s world. Start by learning basic programming languages, then practice building websites or developing your own apps. These skills can later be applied to various activities, such as creating a student organization website or a platform for fundraising campaigns.  

 

Create Your Own Projects

There are countless extracurricular opportunities, and students can also create their own. For instance, if you’re interested in computer science but your school lacks a related club, start one yourself. Design the club’s curriculum, inspire peers, and organize inter-school competitions. This not only strengthens your technical skills but also develops your leadership abilities. 

 

 

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You don’t need grand projects to embark on a STEM journey. By starting small and gradually building a solid foundation, stepping outside traditional academic structures, and cultivating international competencies, students can steadily enhance their competitiveness and prepare to shine on the global stage.
